DO THE RIGHT THING
IT PAYS TO PAY ATTENTION TO LEADERSHIP, SAYS A NEW STUDY
"Management is doing things right;
leadership is doing the right things."
So said the late Professor Peter F. Drucker,
the thinker and management consultant who
created the concept of the Knowledge Economy.
The Top Companies for Leaders 2007 study
compiled by Hewitt Associates is precisely
about identifying those organizations that have
supplemented the laudable aim of 'doing things
right' with the truly excellent one of 'doing
the right things'. The participants in the study
identify 'right things' as securing leadership
talent supply and creating in effect a brand
for leadership in each organization so it can
maintain eminence in its field and competitive
advantage in the future.
The study found that, at the moment,
leadership talent still isn't receiving the
attention it deserves. Many organizations have
sophisticated management systems in place
to ensure they deliver consistently high quality
products and services to customers.
Those same organizations may not always
pay as much attention to securing continuity in
the quality of their leadership or in maintaining a
strong reputation in the talent market.
Yet failure to do these things can put their
core businesses at risk.
This is not exclusively a Hewitt perspective.
This is what leaders told researchers during
the study. |
