How do you feel about our Business Partnership certification?

Jeannie: Well I feel accomplished. Initially when I looked at the course booklet, I felt it would be a lot of hard work. The Certification Program kick-started in Kuala Lumpur in February 2008 and I completed the certification nine months later in November! Every workshop was intense with an e-learning module to be completed before the 2 day course. It's a great feel to have completed the course and know that I have come a long journey to emerge as a learned HR professional! I'm also proud to be the first Singaporean to have completed the certification. The feelgood factor for me is about 9.5 out of 10 right now!

What are the key lessons that you will take from the course?

Jeannie: Honestly, the friendships I made during the course are as valuable as the certification and! It is hard to pin-down the most valuable lessons as every workshop I learnt something new. I guess I would have to say the sharing of experiences from the other course participants was probably the most valuable. It is great to hear real stories and many of the case studies were relevant to my current role. I think that the opportunity to have overseas participants share their best practices was very unique; Kata sharing her China experiences and learning from Mike that everything in Korea can be settled with beer and a hot bath. I have to comment on the facilitators as well; Julia, Catherine and Mano were so encouraging and that is more important than anything in the course book! You never meet such consultants elsewhere!

What is/are your favorite course/s? Why?

Jeannie: Credible Activism was my favorite course. As a HR Business Partner, the most important characteristic is to be credible with the other business leaders. When you know these business leaders are consulting you for the HR perspective on critical business decisions then you know you have built that credibility. That module opened new insights for me; in particular, we were forced to think of a personal checklist of attributes that help to build this credibility.

The course also taught me how to adapt my communication style for different personalities. I now realize that different communication techniques are effective in dealing with different character traits. In general, I found the sharing sessions very useful. All of the participants sat in a circle and in turn shared their work challenges whilst the group provided best practice and advice. I will never forget one of the other participants advising me that I needed to read some books to understand my problems!
Any other courses worth a special mention?

Jeannie: The first module on Financial Knowledge to the Line was extremely useful. We learnt what kind of financial information would be considered relevant to the general business lines. This is not something I had thought through before.

In addition, I have always had an interest in psychometric tools and the workshop on Facet5 was really intriguing. I have been exposed to other similar tools and the Facet5 came across as one of the most effective and insightful for assessment work. I am inspired to get myself Facet5 certified as it will complement my Performance Management role - which I regard as my forte!

Would you recommend Hewitt Academy to others?

Jeannie: Definitely! Hewitt's learning style is unique and intriguing. The course structure and the facilitators encouraged us to diligently work through the e-learning and thoroughly prepare for the workshops. Participants learn through case studies and hands-on activities which is a very effective learning technique. More significantly, participants are encouraged to share best practices as well as real-life stories so that we can learn from one another.
