The demand for dental care is being driven by a total transformation of the delivery of care by the dental profession as a result of NHS contract changes.

In the last five years dentists have been closing their NHS lists to new patients and many now only provide dental treatment on a private patient basis. Across the country, it is often very difficult to find an NHS dentist and 55% of patients now access care as a private patient. The quality of treatment and materials is high but this comes at a much higher cost than NHS tariff charges.

In this context, it is not surprising that dental insurance is the UK's fastest growing employee benefit.

The traditional dental insurers are NDP, Denplan and CIGNA, but alongside these are a number of new entrants to this fast growth market. Demonstrating value for money to their plan members is one of the challenges providers are currently facing, particularly as in some cases traditional benefit design is not meeting full market expectations.
