Action May Be Required:
In Ireland, same-sex couples in civil relationships will soon have equal rights to married couples and receive the same statutory protections with regard to pension rights. In 2008, the European Court of Justice ruled that EU Member States that treat same-sex partnerships similarly to marriage require occupational pension plans to provide same-sex partners with benefits. Employers may wish to review their plan provisions in light of the new civil partnership law. In Mexico, the Institute for Social Security (IMSS) has decided that it will not reduce pension benefits for individuals enrolled in the IMSS before 1997 and participating in the transitional system from 25 to 10 times the minimum wage for the Federal District.
