On October 20, 2009, the Senate approved by a 79-19 vote the conference report for H.R. 2892, the $42.8 billion fiscal year 2010 homeland security appropriations bill. The bill includes a number of provisions related to immigration, among them a three-year extension of the E-Verify program and three visa programs. E-Verify is the government's voluntary, Web-based electronic eligibility verification program offered by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), along with the Social Security Administration (SSA). E-Verify enables employers to compare employee information taken from the Form I-9 against records kept in DHS and SSA databases. The conference report passed the House on October 15. The bill is expected to be signed into law by President Obama.
