On October 28, 2009 President Obama signed into law the $42.8 billion fiscal year 2010 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appropriations bill (H.R. 2892 and accompanying conference report). The law includes a number of provisions related to immigration, among them a three-year extension of the E-Verify program. E-Verify is the government's voluntary, Web-based electronic eligibility verification program offered by the DHS and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), along with the Social Security Administration (SSA). E-Verify enables employers to compare employee information taken from the Form I-9 against records kept in DHS and SSA databases. The conference report passed the House on October 15 and the Senate on October 20.
